In December 2013, Australian journalist Peter Greste was arrested while working as a foreign correspondent in Egypt for news network Al Jazeera.
He spent 400 days imprisoned in Cairo, and was convicted of being a terrorist.
The Correspondent, starring Richard Roxburgh, give us an insight into his incarceration.
Writer Peter Duncan has adapted Greste’s memoir about his arrest with fellow journalists, Rahel Romahn and Mojean Ari..
Greste, an award-winning journalist who spent 20 years reporting for Reuters, CNN, BBC and Al Jazeera, can no longer work as a foreign correspondent. These days, he’s a university lecturer and advocates for the rights of journalists.
The Correspondent reminds us of the dangers of working for the free press in countries where there is political unrest – and of the many who are killed or incarcerated in connection with their work.
Roxburgh (Rake) plays Peter Greste convincingly in the film, which includes flashbacks to an incident when Greste was in Mogadishu ten years earlier, working with producer Kate Peyton (Yael Stone), who was shot.
Directed by Kriv Sterder, it has a droning and pulsating soundtrack.
119 minutes.
