Film: Bob Trevino Likes It

This is the first feature film from American writer/director/producer Tracie Laymon. It was inspired by true events in her own life.

It is an emotional journey which has won many (13) Audience Awards.

Some viewers may need a handkerchief but will feel-good when they come out of the theatre and perhaps want to see it again – others, not so much.

25 Year old Lily (Barbie Ferreira) is a home-care worker abandoned by her mother when she was four years old. Her father, Bob Trevino (French Stewart) lives in some sort of retirement centre and thinks only of himself and his own needs – and the possibility of the next blonde he might get together with.

Unhappy because she has broken up with her boyfriend after he mistakenly sent her an email addressed to another woman she then has a complete falling out with her mean and self-centred father.

Lily finds that he has blocked her on Facebook but finds another Bob Trevino (John Leguizamo) who lives nearby. He is a married middle-aged man with no children. They start correspondence, and then a lasting friendship which is condoned by his wife Jeanie (Rachel Bay Jones).

An unlikely platonic friendship is formed. He is everything a surrogate father should be, kind, generous and caring and wants nothing more than to listen to her problems and teach her life skills.

The cast is uniformly good. Barbie Ferreira and John Leguizamo are outstanding

105 minutes.

(This film has already shown at the Somerville Perth Film Festival, however keep an eye out for it in cinemas and online streaming services.)
