Film: You Can Go Now

Aboriginal artist Richard Bell is the focus of this documentary which examines black activism in Australia and the rights of First Nations Australians. It is the second of three Australian films selected for showing at the 2023 Perth Film Festival.

Richard Bell has said that “he is an activist masquerading as an artist”. His controversial work shows the colonial occupation of Australia and the lack of the rights of self-determination of First Nations people – and discusses achievements, and the future.

His distinctive art works use humour, satire, word play and appropriation to address the issues that he is fervent about. His presence and distinctive art works use humour, satire, word play and appropriation to address the issues he is fervent about.

He is lauded internationally, but not so well-known in Australia. The Art Gallery of West Australia has three works – two paintings and one DVD projection. “One More Hour of Daylight” is currently on view in Gallery Two.

Director Larissa Behrendt in collaboration with art historian, activist and long-time friend Gary Foley, artists, academics and musicians, has made a graphic film covering the life and times of an influential artist over 50 years, from his childhood in Queensland, living in Redfern, the influence of the American Black Power movement, and the Canberra Tent Embassy.
