Films, Fiction and Fine Food

WA’s Dave Warner is a natural storyteller. Whether it be through his songs, books, or TV scripts, he knows how to tell a rip-roaring yarn. Back in the days when he fronted Dave Warner’s From The Suburbs, Warner’s ability to tell a witty tale set his catchy songs apart and inspired other bands to try harder.
In recent years, Dave has also become an award-winning crime writer. For his latest book, Over My Dead Body, he set himself the ambitious challenge of worming in Sherlock Holmes and offsider, Watson, to help solve a modern murder mystery. We chat to David in this issue.
Another WA talent who’s always juggling umpteen projects is QC, columnist and musician Tom Percy. As Starfish readers know, from time to time we publish short stories by Tom, which always garner much praise.  So much so, we’ve decided to re-publish one of his popular tales, Rikki Don’t Lose  That Number, in this issue.
So if you missed it the first time round, here’s another chance to read it and ponder what effect being a criminal lawyer has had on Tom’s outlook, and his creative juices.
It’s no secret the film industry was thrown into chaos last year, due to Covid. Even so, there are some top-notch films now out, made before the virus hit.
Two of those films, Ammonite and Corpus Christi, are reviewed in this issue. The films couldn’t be more different but both were beautifully shot, with stellar performances from fine actors. Ammonite, reviewed by Ros, stars Kate Winslet and one of our favourite actors, Saoirse Ronan.
Festival film, Corpus Christi stars Polish actor Bartosz Bilenia, a young man with the face of an angel and the angst of a young Brando. We’d never heard of him, but will be watching him from now on. The film will be on at Somerville from Monday and Margot’s review has all the details.
Finally in this issue, we have a yummy recipe for Pear and Date Cake with Maple Buttercream. It’s a favourite  from cookbook Ostro: The Pleasure That Comes From Slowing Down and Cooking With Simple Ingredients, by Julia Busuttil Nishimura.
We’ve certainly slowed down in this lazy hazy summer weather.
Enjoy!
