Given the constant news stories on American politics (fake or otherwise) and the constant arguments about the Second Amendment ‘right to keep and bear arms’ this alarmingly funny musical, written 28 years, ago is well timed.
Multi award winning Stephen Sondheim (West Side Story, Into the Woods, Sweeney Todd) set the standard for modern American musical theatre. He is their greatest living musical composer and lyricist.
Assassins is based on a book by John Weidman and an idea from Charles Gilbert Jr. It tells the stories of nine people who assassinated, or tried to assassinate, Presidents of the United States.
Sondheim once said that this was the only piece that he would not change or rewrite if given the chance. It is funny and dramatic; a thinking person’s musical depicting imaginative historical events and the American dream.
It emulates popular music directed by Jangoo Chapkhana, from the time of Abraham Lincoln to John Kennedy.
Directed by award winning Roger Hodgman this impressive production and excellent cast brings the audience an enjoyable night of clever words and beautiful music.
