Atlas Pearls and Perfumes Managing Director Pierre Fallourd and Francesca Gnagnarella

The exotic Komodo Islands and surrounding tropical seas are the inspiration for Francesca Gnagnarella’s latest set of paintings.

The dynamic Italian artist has joined forces with Atlas Pearls and Perfumes and her works are currently on display at the company’s Bay View Terrace, Claremont premises.

Called The Southern Seas, the in-store show is a colourful venture into the vistas of the Komodos, most renowned for dragons, pristine waters and unspoiled islands.

Atlas sources a selection of its pearls from the seas of the Komodo archipelago, so the two luxuriant forms of art and design have a strong symbiosis.

Francesca’s abstract style is distinctive and instantly recognisable through use of vibrant intermingling amorphous colour shades and careful placement of gold leaf to accentuate the whole and lure the eye.

Oysters sans pearls can be very good, too!

The combination affords the pieces a soft luminescence and subtly of hue that can be mesmerising. Recognition and remembrance of past vistas emerge from her creations.

She says there is little attempt to describe a scene or subject, but rather to capture fleeting moments of memory with a colour vision on canvas.

Mastura Koelmeyer and Demelza Leonard

This might be a sunset or sunrise, looking at the earth and sky before or after rain, sunburnt desert, blue ocean, or distant islands.

Nat and Sabine

“Landscape is all about colour, whether subtle and soft or vibrant with contrast,” she says.

Gary Ogden and Tracey Muemann

She incorporates bold brush strokes and dripped paint together with thinned veiled satins to create shifting layers of colour.

Jordan Kay and Kendra Fallows

Francesca started exhibiting in Paris prior to finishing her degree at the Sorbonne University and she held her first solo exhibition in Rome in 2006.

Kirsten Tennant and Sara James

She exhibits regularly between Hong Kong, Singapore, Europe and Australia, and her paintings can be found in collections around the world.

Her collaboration with Atlas is a seamless fit.

Starfish are always draped in pearls…

Atlas South Sea pearls are harvested from five pearl farms extending through the Indonesian Archipelago to West Papua.
